Came to Purcell in 1979 as an Assistant Football Coach, Assistant Basketball Coach, and Science Teacher
Assistant Football Coach for 11 seasons (1979 - 1989) at PHS. His teams compiled a record of (93 - 39) during that time period (a 70.45% winning percentage) and won 13 playoff games
Over the next few years, Mike spent time teaching in Texas, then he returned to Oklahoma where he taught and coached at Lone Grove and at Westmoore, before returning to Purcell as the Junior High Head Football Coach
Accepted the Head Football Coaching position at PHS in 2000 after Bob Yadon left for a job in Texas
Head Football Coach at Purcell for 12 seasons (2000 - 2011) where he compiled a record of (98 - 34), which makes him the 2nd winningest head football coach ever for the Dragons. Mike had a winning percentage of 69.50% while Head Football Coach at Purcell, and he finished his career trailing only Jim Conger who had 100 wins at Purcell as Head Football Coach
After Mike's first 2 seasons as Head Coach, his record was (8 - 13), as he was getting his program established. Then, over the next 10 seasons, (2002 - 2012), Mike's teams went (90 - 21) winning an average of 9 games per year during that period. His teams also set the on-going school record of 11 play-off appearances in a row (2001 - 2012)
In 23 years as an Assistant Football Coach and Head Football Coach at Purcell, Mike's teams won 191 games and lost only 82 (a winning percentage of 69.96%)
In Mike's 23 years at Purcell as a football Coach, Mike coached: 20 winning seasons and 20 playoff teams; Teams that won 11 District Championships; Teams that won 9 Bi-District Championships; 7 Quarter-Finalist Teams; 1 Semi-Finalist Team; 1 State Finalist Team (2004); and 10 All-State Football Players
In his 23 years at Purcell, Mike has been a part of almost 25% of the total football games PHS has played. Mike has also been part of 29% of the PHS program's total football victories in those same 23 years
Known by many in the Purcell / Wayne area as a gentle giant both in the classroom and on the football field. His easy-going manner and calm demeanor hid the beating heart of a champion. Highly respected by his peers, former players and his students. His body of work that he put into the Purcell Schools and the PHS Football program speaks not only for itself, but also of him.
