After graduation at OU in 1962, entered service with the U.S. Army where through basic training at Ft. Benning, GA. Upon completion, Tom was sent to Ft. Holabird, MD where he underwent training in Army Intelligence
Played on many Armed Forces Basketball Teams while in the service including those at Ft. Holabird and later at Ft. Sill, where Tom was stationed as an Army Investigator. He also served as the Commander of his unit at Ft. Sill for 8 months
After his discharge, Tom became the Co-Publisher of the Sulphur-Times Democrat ( 1964 )
Tom and his family moved back to Purcell in 1968 where he became the General Manager of the Purcell Register. Tom eventually became the Owner & Editor of the paper for many years
Tom helped to establish the "Boney Matthews Award" in 1972 and the "Dragon Angel Award" in 1985 which go each year to the outstanding Purcell High School boy and girl athletes respectively
Tom has served on many boards and committees at the University of Oklahoma, including those that made the recommendation to hire Barry Switzer as Head Football Coach in 1973 and to hire Billy Tubbs as Head Basketball Coach in 1980
Was one of the six OU alums (including George Kernek) that started the OU Tip-In Club in 1972
Named By Gov. George Nigh to serve as a University of Oklahoma Regent (1980-1987)
Named as an End on the 1950's PHS All-Decade Football Team by Purcell Football Alumni
Tom has been a lifelong supporter of the Purcell Schools and the Dragon Athletic Program. He is especially proud of the fact that he is the father of 5 past Dragon stand-out athletes Lisa, Lynn, Tom-Tom, Candy, and John
